We all mess up we are human beings and we make mistakes.  It is how we handle those mistakes that makes the difference. For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23

It is when we take that sin to Jesus and lay it at His feet that it makes a difference.  We ask for forgiveness and repent of the sin.  Then we spend times waiting on the Lord.  With prayer and reading the scriptures.  That is how we get a closer walk with Jesus. That is why Jesus left us His Holy Spirit.  I have to ask the Holy spirit to give me a refill every single day to ward off my stinking flesh.  The wonderful thing is that He does fill me fresh every day.  I love what my grandson does when he messes up, he pulls his tee shirt at the top and says Holy Spirit help me I’m actin stupid again.  At first I laughed but when I really thought about it in his 10 year old mind he is communicating with the Holy Spirit.  It is really simple but it works.
